HANGING OUT AT THE MASSAGE SCHOOL
Insight into massage schools. All day long I am around those massage students and massage therapy instructors who are learning/teaching and practicing the art and craft of, as we in the field sometimes call it, bodywork. There are those days, like today, when I look for other ways than the jargon of skin, muscles, bones, shiatsu, Swedish, etc. to relate to all of this...and I poke around in my philosophical and/or scientific theory baskets for the other ways to talk about the work. What about deeper meanings? Where do they come from?
Throughout the millennia we have rubbed ourselves and others to smooth out aches and pains...to comfort and groom ourselves and others. When we look at other animal species and see that many of them do some of the same it's at least a step toward concluding that there is something about touch phenomena that is buried deep in our biology, often beyond the reach of what we call the conscious. Is it in our soul? Along with the "rational," which is so much a part of massage therapy training, there is something about this work which hearkens to something deeper than, or beyond, the "reasons" which we offer in massage therapy training, or promoting our services to clients.

So, that's afternoon's venture looking for more meaning.
